Routine Dental Care

Sound Smiles Dental is a leading local provider of the routine dental care in Bainbridge Island, because you need to keep your mouth and teeth healthy and looking good, year-round.

Getting regular dental checkups and cleanings helps prevent oral health problems before they start. Our routine dental care services include X-rays, oral exams, dental cleanings, and periodontal (gum) treatments.

Oral exams and X-rays

Oral exams and X-rays are an important part of your regular dental checkups. Using X-rays and other technology, we inspect your teeth and gums for any problems. Using a combination of examination methods, we make a confident assessment of the health of your mouth so that we can provide the right recommendations.

Oral exams are also important for detecting oral cancer.

Dental cleanings

Professional dental cleanings, also called recare visits, are necessary to keep your teeth looking and feeling their best. At our office, we use the gentlest, most effective cleaning methods available to polish your teeth and remove built-up plaque.

Periodontal care

As you age, your gum health becomes the most crucial determinant of your oral health. Gum disease can weaken the bone structure of teeth and cause them to loosen. In addition to practicing good gum care at home, periodontal deep cleanings can reverse the progression of gum disease.

In the earliest stage of gum disease, also called gingivitis, something called a “periodontal pocket” is formed. This is a space between your gums and your teeth that has collected inflammation-causing plaque and bacteria that will threaten the teeth if allowed to progress.

Periodontal therapy, or deep cleaning, removes the plaque and bacteria below the gum line in the periodontal pocket, thus reversing the condition. Depending on the state of your gums, you may need to get these deep cleanings on a semi-regular basis.

How often to get routine dental care

As a rule of thumb, you should see the dentist every six months. However, in some cases your dentist will advise you to get more frequent checkups and cleanings. You may need to see the dentist more often than every six months if:

  • You have current gum disease.
  • You tend to build up plaque and get a lot of cavities.
  • You are a smoker.
  • You are a diabetic.
  • You have a weakened immune system.

Although practicing good oral hygiene at home can allow you to safely go a little longer between dental visits, it’s not a good idea to delay routine dental care for too long. Don’t let fear or procrastination keep you from going to the dentist. We don’t bite! Make an appointment with our friendly, professional dental team today.
